Jeremy Vine was visibly emotional and tearful during a live broadcast on his Channel 5 show as he paid tribute to his close friend and regular guest Ann Widdecombe, who was found dead last week. Widdecombe, 78, a former politician and television personality, had been scheduled to appear on the programme on the day of her death. A production team member had spoken with her earlier that day, but she did not participate in the planned online interview.
Regular Contributor to Jeremy Vine's Shows
Ann Widdecombe had appeared on The Jeremy Vine Show more than 50 times and was also a frequent contributor to Vine's BBC Radio 2 programme. Beyond her political career, she was known for her appearances on Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity Big Brother. Her longstanding friendship with Vine was evident as he struggled to compose himself during the tribute.
Guest Iain Dale told Jeremy: "She loved coming on it. She loved your viewers and she loved you. You were part of her family and she really spoke very highly of you, and I know you went out of your way to be kind to her." Jeremy expressed gratitude before becoming visibly overcome, his voice cracking and eyes welling with tears. He said: "Well, that is too much to hear today. Thank you so much, Iain. We are involved here because, on the day of her death, this office was in touch with her by chance."
Counter Terrorism Police Take Over Investigation
Counter terrorism police have assumed leadership of the investigation into Widdecombe's death, confirming that "new information and evidence has come to light." A 28-year-old white British man initially arrested on suspicion of murder has been re-arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism. This grants police powers under the Terrorism Act to hold a suspect without charge for up to 14 days. Devon and Cornwall Police had previously faced pressure to bring charges following the initial arrest.
Head of National Counter Terrorism Policing, Laurence Taylor, stated: "Building on the progress made by our colleagues in Devon and Cornwall Police, we now have new information and evidence that means Counter Terrorism Policing is now leading the investigation."
Widdecombe's Recent TV Moments
Last year, Ann Widdecombe brought laughter to The Jeremy Vine Show when she wore a bucket hat and listened to Oasis "for the first time." She declined complimentary tickets, stating she preferred Cliff Richard and The Shadows. The Jeremy Vine Show airs live on Channel 5 every weekday morning at 9.15am.
