Inside Iran’s Shrine of Khamenei as Missing Successor Sparks Speculation
Inside Khamenei’s Shrine as Successor Remains Missing

The interior of the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad, where the body of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei is interred, has been revealed through images distributed by Getty Images. The photographs show the coffin surrounded by an abundance of red rose petals and floral arrangements, with an altar draped in traditional Islamic cloth bearing the inscription “peace be upon you.” A portrait of Khamenei, also adorned with flowers, is visible in the low-lit grand interior. Khamenei was killed in an airstrike during the initial phase of the joint US-Israeli offensive against Iran earlier this year. His funeral processions in Tehran and other cities drew hundreds of thousands of mourners, demonstrating the hard-liners’ support for clerical rule and resistance against the West and Israel.

Media Restrictions and Imagery

The Getty Images captions include a notable restriction notice: “RESTRICTIONS: No Access Israel Media/Persian Language TV Stations Outside Iran/Strictly No Access BBC Persian/VOA Persian/Manoto TV/Iran International TV.” This highlights Iran’s efforts to silence Western media, though the images are distributed globally. The shrine is a significant religious site, and the display underscores the regime’s attempt to control the narrative surrounding Khamenei’s death.

Mojtaba Khamenei’s Disappearance

Adding to the intrigue, Khamenei’s successor and brother, Mojtaba Khamenei, has not been seen since being officially named Supreme Leader several months ago. Reports indicate he suffered severe injuries, including facial disfigurement, from an attack. He did not appear at the funeral but issued a statement vowing revenge: “I will avenge your pure blood and the blood of all those martyred in these two wars by bringing the criminal and dishonourable killers to justice. This revenge is the demand of our nation, and it will most certainly be carried out.” Many speculate he may be dead, but Iran likely withholds this to avoid a propaganda victory for US President Donald Trump.

Renewed US Threats

Trump, who restarted hostilities with Iran after peace talks collapsed, posted on Truth Social: “1,000 missiles are locked and loaded and aimed at the Islamic Republic of Iran, with thousands of more to immediately follow, should the Iranian government act on its threat.” This escalation follows the airstrike that killed Khamenei and the ongoing conflict.
