Jordan Henderson has spoken out for the first time after a freak injury that will end his World Cup campaign. The 36-year-old England international suffered a severe broken wrist following a fall over advertising hoardings after the final whistle of England's 3-2 victory over Mexico at the Estadio Azteca.
Freak Accident During Celebrations
As Thomas Tuchel's side celebrated their last-16 win, Henderson attempted to clamber over advertising hoardings to join the travelling supporters. He landed awkwardly, resulting in a broken wrist. He was stretchered out of the stadium, required oxygen, and was rushed to hospital for treatment. The rest of the squad departed for Kansas City.
It was confirmed on Monday that the experienced midfielder requires surgery and will miss the remainder of the tournament. This World Cup may be Henderson's final appearance for England, as it is expected to be his last major tournament.
Henderson's Social Media Update
Despite the setback, Henderson shared an update on Instagram, focusing on the occasion. He wrote: "A night to remember that's for sure! What an incredible performance against all the different challenges. So proud to be a part of this special team. Thanks for all the support, another big one Saturday."
His England teammates responded with support. Vice-captain Declan Rice commented: "Some man," and Morgan Rogers said: "What a guy." Elliot Anderson and Djed Spence also sent heart emojis.
Henderson's Role in the Squad
Henderson is determined to remain with the squad to provide backing and has maintained regular contact with teammates. England defender Marc Guehi provided an update on Henderson's state of mind, telling the FA's Lions' Den show: "Hendo's good, man. Hendo's in a better place than he was yesterday, and it was obviously scary for him and his family and for everyone else, but we're just glad that he's on the road to speedy recovery."
Henderson earned his 90th cap for England when he came on as a substitute against Panama in the group stage. He is the only England men's player to appear at four World Cup tournaments. Tuchel selected him for his experience and leadership, despite widespread criticism.
Quarter-Final Prospects
It remains unclear whether Henderson will stay with the squad for Saturday's quarter-final against Norway. Speaking about his inclusion in June, Henderson said: "It's the same as always, to be the best version of myself, to be ready to help the team on and off the pitch and give absolutely everything to help this team be successful. The last few years has been a bit of a roller coaster, to say the least, but I've worked very hard to be in this position and made a lot of sacrifices, and I'm just very grateful and honoured to be here. It's about giving absolutely everything to make the nation back home very proud of us."
