Gran killed by 11ft alligator while saving dog in Florida

An 85-year-old grandmother was killed by an 11-foot alligator in February 2023 while trying to save her beloved Shih Tzu, Trooper, during a lunchtime walk at the Spanish Lakes Fairways retirement village in Florida.

Gloria Serg had been enjoying her routine of walking her dog by the lakes in the peaceful grounds, waving to friends and taking in the sunshine. The attack happened when the alligator leaped from the water and grabbed Trooper, prompting Gloria to rush to her dog's aid. A final photo captured her moments before the alligator turned on her.

Neighbor's harrowing account

Carol Thomas, a neighbor who also lived at Spanish Lakes Fairways, witnessed the scene and rushed to help. She said at the time: "I heard something and I looked and Gloria was down, the dog was running up the hill and I saw the alligator come out and grab her leg."

Thomas described Gloria coming up for air and pushing her hair back, with her arm extended. Thomas called out for Gloria to swim toward an overturned paddle boat, but Gloria replied, "I can't. The gator has me!" Thomas grabbed a metal pole to hit the alligator's snout, but Gloria did not resurface.

Aftermath and safety warnings

It is believed the alligator dragged Gloria's body to the bottom of the lake. Trooper escaped completely unhurt. Thomas reflected: "There's nothing you can do. Just kind of haunted by that, you know, I don't know what else I could've done."

Following the tragedy, experts from Busch Wildlife Sanctuary advised people to stay between 15 and 20 feet away from any alligator. Amy Kight, Executive Director of Busch Wildlife Sanctuary, said: "Do not feed them, do not mess with them, do not try to befriend them. Let them live their life, you do yours and you shouldn't run into any problems."

Family grief and official response

Gloria's son, speaking at a press conference, said: "I never could have imagined the agonizing way that my mother spent the last moments of her life. The sudden, violent nature of this attack, thinking about my mom in her final moments, resulted in a whole different level of all-consuming grief."

The 435-acre Spanish Lakes Fairways complex is thought to be home to several wild alligators in its lakes. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said responsibility lay with residents to remain vigilant, urged people to report concerns, and acknowledged there was no supervision of the lakes at the time. The alligator responsible for the attack was captured and destroyed following Gloria's death.
