Florida Man Charged with Wife's Acid Murder in Shocking Domestic Homicide
Florida husband charged with wife's acid murder

A Florida man is facing a first-degree murder charge following the horrific death of his wife, who succumbed to injuries from a brutal acid attack earlier this year.

Darrin Lopez, 53, was arrested this week in connection with the death of his 47-year-old wife, Elena Lopez. The victim passed away in late May after a months-long struggle with severe burns covering over 50% of her body.

A Prolonged and Painful Demise

The attack occurred on February 22nd at the couple's home in Palm Coast. According to Flagler County Sheriff's Office, Elena was doused with a highly corrosive chemical substance, resulting in life-altering injuries.

She endured multiple surgeries and extensive medical treatment at a burn specialist unit in Miami before ultimately losing her battle for survival.

From Person of Interest to Prime Suspect

Sheriff Rick Staly revealed that Lopez had been a person of interest since the initial incident. The arrest came after meticulous investigation and consultation with the District Attorney's office, which confirmed that the charges would be upgraded following Elena's death.

"This was a horrific way to die," Sheriff Staly stated during a press conference. "She suffered tremendously until her death."

Chilling 999 Call Revealed

Newly released bodycam footage and the emergency call capture the chaotic aftermath of the attack. In the 999 recording, Lopez can be heard telling operators: "My wife's on the floor. She's burned. She's got acid all over her."

When asked what happened, he claimed: "I don't know. I just woke up and found her like that."

A History of Domestic Strife

Court records indicate the couple had a troubled marriage. Elena had previously filed for divorce in 2021, though the petition was later withdrawn. Neighbors described hearing frequent arguments emanating from their home.

Lopez is currently being held without bond at the Flagler County jail. If convicted, he faces a mandatory life sentence under Florida law.
