FIFA Probes Racist Abuse of IShowSpeed at World Cup

FIFA has launched an immediate investigation into allegations of racist abuse directed at prominent streamer IShowSpeed during World Cup matches. The football governing body issued a strong statement condemning the incidents and confirming a formal probe.

Alleged Incidents at World Cup Matches

IShowSpeed, known as Speed, is one of the world's most-watched streamers with over 57 million YouTube subscribers. He attended Argentina's dramatic 3-2 victory over Cape Verde on July 3, 2026, at Miami Stadium, where he allegedly endured racist gestures from Argentinian supporters. A second incident occurred at Atlanta Stadium during Argentina's contentious 3-2 win over Egypt, where his broadcast captured fans making what appeared to be "monkey" gestures toward him.

FIFA's Strong Response

"FIFA strongly condemns racism, hate and discrimination in all forms," the governing body said in a statement. "These actions have no place in football, at the FIFA World Cup, or anywhere in society. FIFA was made aware of an incident involving a supporter and IShowSpeed at Miami Stadium during the Argentina vs Cabo Verde match on 3 July 2026 and immediately initiated an investigation." FIFA added that the World Cup is "a celebration of unity, diversity and respect" and that anyone undermining these values "is not welcome in our game."

Wider Context of Racism in Football

The investigation follows other recent racist incidents at the tournament. French star Kylian Mbappe was targeted by Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla after France defeated Paraguay. Amarilla wrote a lengthy letter to Mbappe, who called her "despicable." She later threatened legal action against Mbappe for alleged "gender based violence," prompting FIFA and the United Nations to issue statements. World Cup legend George Weah backed Mbappe, saying on behalf of FIFA: "We stand in complete solidarity with Kylian Mbappe and condemn this reprehensible abuse in the strongest possible terms. Football must always be a game of respect, inclusion, and unity. There can be zero tolerance for discrimination of any kind. Our message is clear: racism is never part of the game. It's a crime."
