The heartbroken family of a 66-year-old man who died following an assault outside a village pub have described him as a devoted family man and a friend to all.

A Life Tragically Cut Short

David Darke passed away in hospital on Saturday, 23 December 2023. He had sustained serious injuries during an incident outside The Crown Inn in Appleby Magna, Leicestershire, on Thursday, 21 December.

In an emotional tribute, his grieving relatives painted a picture of a vibrant and much-loved individual. They said Dave was a deeply loved father to three daughters and a proud grandfather to three boys. He was also a cherished brother and a dear friend to many.

A Kind and Active Soul

The family's statement highlighted his character and passions. "He was a strong, active, intelligent and kind person who was a friend to all," they said. "He was a devoted family man with a deep passion for life, the outdoors, nature and walking."

They expressed the profound loss felt by all who knew him, stating he would live on forever in their hearts, minds, and souls. "His life was tragically cut short and he’s now reunited with his loving, caring parents. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him," the tribute concluded.

Murder Investigation Launched

Leicestershire Police confirmed that following Mr Darke's death, the investigation has been upgraded. A 36-year-old man, initially arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm, was re-arrested on suspicion of murder on Saturday, 23 December.

The suspect remains in police custody as detectives continue their enquiries into the tragic events outside the village pub. The force is likely appealing for any witnesses who have not yet come forward.
