The family of a three-year-old boy who was allegedly thrown into a crocodile enclosure at a zoo in Cambridgeshire have broken their silence to praise the rescuers. The toddler, who has not been named, is now in stable condition at Addenbrooke's Hospital after undergoing multiple surgeries following the incident at Johnson’s of Old Hurst.
Incident Details
The boy was taken to hospital in critical condition after the incident on June 30, 2026. Staff members, including the zoo owner's wife Tracey Johnson, 55, and their son Edward, 29, jumped into the enclosure to rescue the child. A 30-year-old man from Norfolk was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder but has been released on bail after being found not fit for interview.
Family Statement
In a statement, the boy's family expressed gratitude: “We would like to thank the staff at the zoo who rescued our son from the enclosure. We are truly grateful for the public support and well-wishes we have received, as well as to everyone who has been directly involved in our son's care and recovery in hospital.” They added that their focus remains on his recovery through a “challenging and prolonged period.”
Ongoing Recovery
The boy remains at Addenbrooke's Hospital and faces a long road to recovery. Police have not yet provided further details on the suspect or the motive. The zoo has not commented on the incident beyond confirming the rescue.
