England fans have been left fuming after a popular Irish pub in Boston, the Dubliner Pub, decided to shut its doors on the day of the Three Lions' World Cup clash against Ghana. The pub, which had previously welcomed Scottish fans during their matches at the 2026 World Cup, posted a statement on social media that many interpreted as a deliberate snub.
Scottish Fans Welcomed, England Shunned
The Tartan Army had taken over the city of Boston for Scotland's opening two matches against Haiti and Morocco at Foxborough Stadium. Locals embraced the Scottish supporters, who celebrated a victory over Haiti and, despite a loss to Morocco, left a positive impression. The Dubliner Pub was reportedly a hub for Scottish fans, who drank the place dry. However, when England arrived for their match against Ghana on Tuesday, the pub announced it would be closed.
Cheeky Statement Sparks Fury
The pub's Instagram post read: “We’ve decided to give our staff a day off and are closing today, they’ve worked incredibly hard over the last 2 weeks and deserve it. Thankfully there’s nothing happening in Boston today so we will be back tomorrow. #noscotlandnoparty.” The comment was widely seen as a dig at England fans, with Scottish supporters celebrating the move. One user, @Haveyouinstitches, said: “Could anything have prepared you for the Tartan Army and what advice would you give a bar? [laugh] thanks for looking after my countrymen [Scotland flag].” Another, @western.mass.bestie, added: “Love my petty besties at the Dubliner for being closed during the England match. And bravo for giving the staff a day of rest!”
England's World Cup Stakes
England's match against Ghana was crucial for their World Cup campaign. A victory would see them through to the knockout stage with a game to spare, with Panama up next in the final group match. The round-of-32 stage begins on Sunday. Meanwhile, Scotland's World Cup party continued in Miami ahead of their final group match against Brazil on Wednesday night. Clarke's side stands on the brink of making history, as they look to qualify for the knockout stage for the first time.
