Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was escorted away after a heated exchange with a Liverpool supporter in the Anfield tunnel following the Citizens' controversial 3-0 victory over the Reds.
Hostile atmosphere at Anfield
The atmosphere inside Anfield was furious before kick-off, with home fans loudly booing City players in response to the club's guilty verdict regarding 114 breaches of the Premier League's financial regulations, which City have appealed.
"You cheating b*******, you know what you are" and "You haven't won a trophy since 1976," echoed around the stadium in the build-up, while supporters displayed powerful banners expressing their sense of betrayal during City's period of now disputed dominance in English football.
Confrontation at full-time
Some fans directed their anger straight at City players as they departed Anfield's pitch at full-time, with goalkeeper Donnarumma becoming embroiled in a fiery confrontation with a home fan while heading towards the tunnel.
A supporter appeared to have grabbed the shot-stopper's attention by branding his club cheats, causing the Italian to turn back and confront what had been shouted at him.
Social media footage captures Donnarumma briefly trading words with the fan in question, before being hauled away by City's backroom team and escorted down the tunnel.
City overwhelm 10-man Reds
Despite Liverpool dominating proceedings for an hour, Ryan Gravenberch's dismissal on the 62-minute mark completely turned the contest upside down.
The midfielder was already carrying a controversial booking for apparently treading on Elliot Anderson's foot and sending him tumbling as the second period commenced, in a foul referee Chris Kavanagh deemed worthy of a yellow card.
Roughly 15 minutes later, the Dutchman was trudging towards the tunnel for an early bath after naively fouling Jeremy Doku when the winger raced past him during a swift counter-attack.
Erling Haaland opened the scoring for the Citizens just three minutes afterwards, with Doku adding a second for the away side moments later. Rayan Cherki put the result beyond doubt with approximately 10 minutes remaining on the clock, as City overwhelmed the 10-men Reds, despite supporters' best attempts to unsettle them.
