A North East father has been found guilty of murdering his baby son by violently shaking him. Bradley Thomas, 23, of Redcar, was convicted by a jury at Teesside Crown Court for the death of his 14-week-old son, Emmerson-Oak Thomas, in the early hours of October 5 last year.
Incident Details
Thomas shook the baby when he would not settle during the night. The child suffered catastrophic brain injuries, which experts described as non-accidental. One medic compared the injuries to those from a fall from a third-floor window onto concrete. The baby also had bleeding on his spinal cord and behind both eyes.
Mother's Testimony
Thomas's partner testified that he was always gentle with their son and that their relationship was near perfect. She initially thought Thomas was calling her because Emmerson had done something, but she heard terror in his voice. She found the baby limp and pale, and Thomas had recorded a video of his raspy breathing. She performed CPR while Thomas called an ambulance.
Prosecution Case
Prosecutor Toby Hedworth said Thomas lost self-control and became angry when Emmerson would not take his bottle. Thomas was the only person downstairs with the baby that night. He had denied shaking his son, claiming the injuries could have resulted from a fall from his lap onto a carpet, which doctors ruled out.
Sentencing
Judge Clive Sheldon thanked the jury for their careful consideration. Thomas will be sentenced on July 15 and has been remanded in custody. Detective Superintendent Deb Fenny of Cleveland Police said the verdict ensures Thomas is held accountable for his actions.
