Countdown Contestant Snapped: 'Growled and Stabbed Rival' in Shocking Board Game Rampage
Countdown contestant stabbed rival in pen rage

A championship-level Countdown contestant spiralled into a terrifying rage, growling and stabbing a fellow player with a pen during a friendly game, a court has heard.

Dylan Dreyer, 23, was playing the popular words and numbers board game at a friend's flat when he launched the unprovoked attack on his victim, Louis Snowdon. The incident left the group of friends in a state of shock and disbelief.

Prosecutor Joseph Hudson told Leicester Crown Court that the atmosphere turned dark after a dispute over the game's rules. "The defendant became aggressive," Mr. Hudson stated. "He then grabbed a pen and stabbed the victim in his hand, causing a significant wound."

Dreyer, of Loughborough, Leicestershire, had previously reached the finals of a Countdown championship, showcasing his intellect on the iconic Channel 4 show. However, his behaviour on this occasion was described as entirely out of character and profoundly alarming.

In a victim impact statement, Mr. Snowdon revealed the lasting trauma of the attack, saying it has left him "constantly on edge and unable to trust people." The court was told the physical wound has healed, but the psychological scars remain.

Dreyer pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful wounding. Representing the defendant, David Watts stated that his client was "deeply ashamed" of his actions, which were exacerbated by a difficult period in his life and a lack of sleep.

Recorder Paul Bleasdale KC sentenced Dreyer to 12 months in prison, suspended for 18 months. He must also complete 150 hours of unpaid work and 20 rehabilitation activity days. The judge warned Dreyer that his "intelligence did not excuse his behaviour," emphasising the serious nature of the violent assault.
