The game burst into life early when Rayan Cherki produced a moment of brilliance to put City ahead, weaving past Gabriel Magalhães and Declan Rice before finishing coolly. The contest was also notable for the physical battle between Haaland and Gabriel, which escalated when the Arsenal defender had his shirt ripped and later the pair came forehead-to-forehead, resulting in yellow cards for both. City boss Pep Guardiola believed Gabriel should have been sent off, but the referee deemed a booking sufficient.
