A car crashed through railings on an overhead flyover and fell on to Ireland's busiest motorway, bringing rush-hour traffic to a standstill.
Crash details and injuries
The crash happened on the southbound M50 at Ballymount, Junction 10, at around 3.20pm on Wednesday, causing significant delays for several hours. Gardai said the two occupants of the car, a man and a woman aged in their 80s, were removed from the scene for treatment of serious injuries. No other injuries were reported.
An older couple were in the car, which had been travelling on the correct side of the road on the flyover before smashing through heavy railings and toppling on to the motorway below, reports the Irish Mirror.
Investigation and road closure
Gardai are investigating whether the driver may have suffered a medical emergency before the crash. Sources told the Irish Mirror that the car had been travelling on the correct side of the road and there was no suspicion of criminality.
The southbound carriageway was initially closed and diversions were put in place while the scene was held for a technical examination. The M50 reopened at around 7pm after several hours of disruption.
