Ruben Amorim was sacked by Manchester United in January after losing nearly as many matches as he won, following an infamous outburst after a draw with Leeds. But despite his turbulent tenure, one decision he made continues to pay dividends: the sale of Alejandro Garnacho to Chelsea for £40 million.
Amorim's Apology and Reunion with United
Amorim, now head coach of AC Milan, will reunite with Manchester United on August 15 in a pre-season friendly. Last week, he apologised to United fans, saying, "The only thing I can say is that I learn a lot and I did some mistakes. I didn't have opportunity – and I am sorry for that – to say something to the Manchester United fans at the moment. I am really proud to have been their coach for a year."
Garnacho's Decline After Leaving United
Garnacho, who broke into United's first team and showed brilliance, became a disruptive influence. After openly criticising Amorim following the 2025 Europa League final defeat and wearing an Aston Villa shirt with Marcus Rashford's name on it, he was sold. At Chelsea, the 22-year-old made 24 Premier League appearances last season, scoring just once. Now, with Xabi Alonso at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea are looking to move him on for £42.5 million, but no firm offers have been received.
United's Recovery Under Carrick
Since Amorim's departure, Michael Carrick has steadied the ship at Old Trafford, sending the club in a new direction. While Amorim's rigid system and decision to freeze out Kobbie Mainoo were criticised, his willingness to part with underperforming players like Garnacho has been vindicated.
