72 MEPs Demand FIFA Probe Over Balogun Ban Reversal After Trump Claim
72 MEPs Demand FIFA Probe Over Balogun Ban Reversal

Seventy-two members of the European Parliament have formally contacted all 27 EU football associations, calling for an urgent investigation into FIFA's decision to overturn a one-match suspension imposed on USMNT forward Folarin Balogun during the World Cup. The controversy erupted after US President Donald Trump claimed responsibility for the U-turn, sparking allegations of political interference and corruption.

Balogun Red Card and Ban Overturned

Balogun was sent off during the round-of-32 clash between the United States and Bosnia and Herzegovina for a challenge widely described as lenient. Under FIFA rules, the red card triggered an automatic one-match ban, which would have ruled him out of the round-of-16 match against Belgium. However, FIFA rescinded the suspension, allowing Balogun to play. Trump subsequently boasted that his personal intervention had persuaded FIFA to reverse the decision, though the governing body denied any political meddling.

Balogun featured in the match against Belgium but could not prevent a 4-1 defeat, eliminating the co-hosts from the tournament. Despite the US exit, the fallout has continued, with European lawmakers now demanding accountability.

MEPs Letter to EU Football Associations

In a letter addressed to the 27 EU member associations, the 72 MEPs expressed deep concern over the decision-making process. They wrote: "In light of the decision taken on Sunday to suspend the implementation of an automatic one-match suspension, we feel that it is time for European Football Associations, all of whom are member associations of FIFA, to intervene and ask that FIFA investigate the aforementioned decision-making processes. FIFA's statutory rules and code of ethics provide a very clear basis for member associations to intervene and demand an investigation."

The lawmakers argued that FIFA violated its own rules on political neutrality, citing Article 4(2) of the FIFA Statutes, which states that "FIFA remains neutral in matters of politics and religion," and Article 15 of the FIFA Code of Ethics, which requires all football officials to remain politically neutral and provides for strong sanctions for violations.

Calls for Scrutiny of Infantino-Trump Links

The MEPs urged the associations to "add your voice to recent calls in support of an investigation into Gianni Infantino's links to President Trump from MEPs and from the Norwegian Football Federation." They stressed that any investigation "must now include scrutiny of the decision-making process surrounding FIFA's decision to rescind the ban imposed on a member of the US men's national team."

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has faced mounting pressure in recent days, with critics accusing the organization of bowing to political influence. The Norwegian Football Federation had previously called for an investigation into Infantino's relationship with Trump, and the latest letter from European lawmakers amplifies those demands.

Broader Implications for FIFA Governance

The controversy has reignited debates about FIFA's governance and its ability to maintain political neutrality. The MEPs' letter underscores the role of member associations in upholding FIFA's rules, noting that they "have an important role to play in ensuring that rules are upheld and that those who break them are held accountable."

As the 27 EU football associations consider the request, the spotlight remains on Infantino and FIFA's handling of the Balogun case. The outcome of any investigation could have significant implications for the organization's credibility and its relationship with national governments.
