70 Firefighters Tackle Travelodge Blaze in Hackney

Seventy firefighters from the London Fire Brigade tackled a blaze at a Travelodge hotel in Hackney, east London, on Sunday. Sixteen people were evacuated from the hotel on Amhurst Road after the fire broke out in two rooms on the fifth and sixth floors.

Evacuation and Response

Those evacuated were taken to a rest centre, and no injuries were reported. The London Fire Brigade advised residents to keep windows closed as ten fire engines and 70 firefighters responded to the incident. A 32-metre ladder was also used to tackle the blaze, which was brought under control after 6pm.

Travel Disruption and Cause

Travel disruption occurred in the surrounding area, including at Hackney Central station. The fire is believed to have been accidental and caused by the unsafe use of incense sticks. An LFB spokesperson stated: "Incense sticks, candles and oil burners are one of the most common causes of fire within homes. It’s really important that you never leave these items unattended."

"Make sure you place incense sticks in a suitable, fire-resistant holder and keep them away from curtains and anything else that can easily catch fire. Remember to put them out entirely when you leave the room and especially before bed," the spokesperson added.
