A 35-year-old man has died following an alleged stabbing in a remote Northern Territory community in the early hours of Boxing Day, with police launching a major investigation.
Police Discover Critically Injured Man
Northern Territory Police were called to a residence in Laramba, located approximately 205 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs, at around 4.40am on Friday, 26 December. The call was in response to a report of an aggravated assault.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a man, aged 35, who had suffered serious chest injuries from an alleged stabbing. He was in a critical condition.
Rushed Treatment Fails to Save Victim
The injured man was transported urgently to a local clinic for emergency medical treatment. Despite the efforts of clinic staff, they were unable to revive him. He was declared dead a short time later.
Police have since declared a crime scene at the Laramba property where the man was found. The circumstances leading to his death remain unclear and are under active investigation.
Major Investigation Launched as Offender Remains at Large
The alleged offender is still at large, prompting a significant police response. Officers from Ti Tree, Yuendumu, and Alice Springs are involved in the initial investigation.
In a major development, detectives from the Major Crime Unit and Southern Investigations are travelling to the remote community to assist local officers. Their focus will be on piecing together the events that led to the fatal incident.
Laramba is a remote Aboriginal community within the Anmatjere ward with a small population of roughly 275 people. The tragedy has shocked the close-knit community.
