Michael Henry, a 19-year-old kayaker from the Rothbury area, is presumed dead after his kayak capsized near Boulmer, Northumberland, on the evening of July 7. Northumbria Police announced on Wednesday that extensive sea searches have concluded and the teenager is believed to have died at sea.
Henry was kayaking with another man when their vessel capsized. The other man managed to reach a buoy and was rescued by the coastguard, but Henry could not be found despite a large-scale search operation involving police, coastguard, and other emergency services.
Family pays tribute
In a statement, Henry's family described him as a "much-loved son, brother, grandson, nephew, team-mate and friend; a keen sportsman who loved the outdoors." They added: "Michael was preparing to go travelling this summer and hoping to start university next academic year. Michael will be forever in our thoughts, and we will miss him."
The family thanked the emergency services and everyone involved in the search, as well as those who have shown support.
Police statement
Chief Inspector Jon Caisley of Northumbria Police expressed condolences, saying: "This is a tragic update to share, and I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Michael's family and friends. Despite extensive searches at sea and on the coast, we have been unable to find Michael and he is sadly believed to have died at sea."
He acknowledged the impact on the community and thanked officers and partners for their search efforts. He also urged the public to respect the family's privacy.
