Holly Woodcock's Death Raises Questions
The parents of Holly Woodcock, a 20-year-old British student from Erith, London, are demanding a thorough investigation after she was found dead at the bottom of a swimming pool in France. Holly died in August 2024 while staying at a friend's holiday villa in St Hilaire-la-Foret, following a party with neighbours.
French authorities concluded at an inquest that Holly drowned, but they did not determine the exact cause of death, and trauma has not been ruled out. Her parents believe the investigation was insufficient and want to ensure there was no foul play.
Incomplete Investigation
Local police halted their inquiry after just over a week, despite unanswered questions and conflicting witness statements. Investigators did not determine how much alcohol Holly had consumed, and DNA samples that could have excluded a medical incident were not taken. Her swimming costume was also destroyed. Mobile phones were not examined, and CCTV footage was never reviewed.
Joanna Woodcock, Holly's mother, told The Daily Mail: "I want to say to Keir Starmer, 'If this were your daughter, you would not have been dealt with this way, where the case would have been dropped after just a few days.'"
Family's Concerns
Holly's father, a construction project manager, expressed frustration: "I feel like standing outside the French Embassy with a placard saying, 'If you want to murder anyone, take them to France, give them a couple of beers, and you'll get away with it. They won't care.'" He noted that Holly's shorts were found neatly folded by the pool, which he says is inconsistent with someone drunk enough to drown.
The family is also concerned that witnesses were not interviewed until the following day, and some individuals were never questioned. The timeline of events remains incomplete.
Appeals Rejected
Appeals to reopen the case have been rejected. The Foreign Office stated it cannot intervene in another country's criminal or judicial process. French investigators said: "The coroner's report indicates that the exact cause of death has not been determined, and that a traumatic cause of death has not been ruled out. Given the context of the report and his findings, the most likely cause of death is drowning."
The family continues to seek answers, hoping for a full investigation to determine what happened to their daughter.
