Household Item Offers Relief During Heatwave

As the UK swelters through a record-breaking heatwave, falling asleep at night has become a challenge for many. While fans are a common solution, television personality and cleaning expert Lynsey Crombie, known as the Queen of Clean, has shared a simple alternative using a common household item.

The Frozen Hot Water Bottle Hack

In a TikTok video posted to her 161,000 followers, Crombie demonstrated her cooling hack. She filled a hot water bottle with cold tap water and placed it in the freezer for several hours. “Too hot to sleep? Try this simple cooling hack!” she said. Once frozen, the bottle can be taken to bed to provide a refreshing, cool surface.

Crombie also issued a safety warning: “Once you’ve used a hot water bottle for freezing, keep it as a cold-only bottle. Freezing can weaken the rubber over time, so don’t switch it back to using hot water, as it could fail and leak.”

Expert Advice on Cold Water Bottle Use

Heat-Treats, a manufacturer, echoes this advice. “It’s simple; just fill your bottle with iced water, ice cubes or crushed ice. The bottle acts in the same way in reverse; instead of releasing warm heat it emits refreshing cold,” they explain. They caution against leaving the bottle in the freezer for more than 20 minutes to avoid compromising the rubber. They also recommend using separate bottles for hot and cold filling and wrapping the bottle in a tea towel or pillowcase to prevent skin overexposure.

Upcoming Temperature Changes

The Met Office forecasts that regional temperatures will drop by up to 15 degrees from Sunday, June 28, returning to seasonal averages. However, this relief will be brief. According to WXCharts, temperatures are expected to rise again, reaching 29 degrees in the southwest by July 8, with highs around 30 degrees in mid-July. This could lead to another heatwave and potential red weather warnings.
