An 88-year-old Texas man has confessed to shooting his terminally ill wife before attempting to take his own life in what authorities describe as a tragic domestic incident.
A Fatal Morning in Galveston
Ernest Leal Sr. admitted to police that he was "going crazy" when he shot and killed his 89-year-old wife, Anita 'Annie' Leal, as she lay in her bed on November 17. The incident occurred shortly before 5am at their two-story home on the Texas gulf coast.
During police questioning, Leal revealed that his wife of 65 years had told him she was sick and "no longer wished to live." Authorities have not disclosed the specific illness Annie was suffering from, but confirmed she was terminally ill.
Emergency Alert and Failed Suicide Attempt
Police were alerted to the scene after a medical alert device registered a potential emergency. The wearable personal emergency device, which allows users to call for help by pressing a button, ultimately led officers to discover the shooting.
When officers arrived, they found Annie Leal on the floor of their home. Her husband claimed he had intended to take his own life as well, but told investigators the gun failed to discharge during his suicide attempt.
A Life Remembered and Legal Consequences
Annie Leal, affectionately known as 'Mimi' or 'Mimi Annie' to her family, was described in her obituary as a "super" mom and devoted member of St Patrick Catholic Church. The couple shared three grown children, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The online tribute highlighted her active life, mentioning that she and her husband sponsored and played in the Galveston YMCA Volleyball League. Known for her fashion sense, Annie always had her hair done and loved showing off her dance moves at mariachi nights at local Mexican restaurants.
Meanwhile, Ernest Leal Sr. has been charged with murder and made his first court appearance in a wheelchair. His bond was reduced from $250,000 to $80,000 during the hearing. A visitation for Annie Leal is scheduled for December 1 at Malloy & Son Funeral Home.
