The family of a 24-year-old pregnant woman are speaking of their heartbreak after she was allegedly attacked, raped, and murdered by a group of people she barely knew. Eight individuals now face charges in connection with the death of Erica Bader, whose body was discovered in a wooded area of Pawtucket, Rhode Island.
Charges Filed in a Brutal Case
Police have confirmed that eight suspects are now charged in relation to Erica Bader's death. Five have been charged with murder and kidnapping, identified as Andrew Cornell, 28; Joshua Brunelle, 35; Elizabeth Durand, 41; Stephanie Bletzer, 37; and Brittney Terpening, 34. The remaining three—Christopher Kordalewski, 22; Joanne Miller, 26; and Cheryl Blakely, 36—face charges of kidnapping, conspiracy, and failure to report a death.
Erica's body was found on 27 October in Pawtucket woods. Her stepmother, Crystal Smith, told media that Erica and her unborn baby were killed. "They should be ashamed of themselves for what they've done," she said. The family alleges the 24-year-old was attacked, sexually assaulted, and murdered in Central Falls before being dumped.
A Family's Anguish and Allegations of Captivity
In a heartbreaking interview, Crystal Smith revealed that Erica did not know her alleged killers before she began staying with them at a Central Falls residence. "They're just random people," Smith stated. "They were like total strangers to her." The family claims Erica was abused at the home and attempted to flee but was forcibly brought back and held hostage. "She tried to run away one time, she didn't get far. They dragged her in, pulled her in that house and held her hostage, basically," Smith alleged.
Authorities conducted a welfare check at the home in April, but Erica was not present. In early November, a search of the property led to the removal of 46 cats and four dogs due to poor living conditions.
Community Shock and Ongoing Investigations
Central Falls Mayor Maria Rivera expressed profound sorrow, stating, "What happened to Erica is absolutely heartbreaking and horrific." She extended her deepest condolences to the family and friends, adding, "No family should ever experience this kind of pain or heartbreak."
While police have not released specific details on the cause of death, the family's account paints a picture of extreme violence. Erica's stepmother concluded with a plea for justice: "It's sad for her to have been in a place where she couldn't get away. I hope they never get out."
The case has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting concerns about violent crime and victim safety. All eight suspects are now awaiting legal proceedings as the investigation continues.
