Drivers parking illegally on the A628 Woodhead Pass have been warned they face a £100 fine, three penalty points and having their car towed away. Glossop police issued the warning alongside a photo of a Seat parked on the roadside near Woodhead Tunnel, describing the parking as “not safe” and warning someone is at risk of being killed.
Popular walking routes and beauty spots
The A-road is one of the few cross-Pennine routes between Greater Manchester and Sheffield, with several popular walking trails and beauty spots nearby, including the Longendale Trail and Black Clough Waterfall. In a statement on Facebook, Glossop police said the parking is dangerous not only for those risking damage to their car but also poses a significant risk to other road users.
Legal consequences under the Road Traffic Act
Police said the parking is illegal and puts other road users at risk of head-on collisions with oncoming traffic, which could cause serious injury or death. They noted it is an offence under Section 22 of the Road Traffic Act to leave vehicles in a dangerous position, and warned drivers to “enjoy the roads safely”.
