Shocking CCTV footage has captured the moment a speeding biker on the pavement collided with a trainee teacher as she stepped off a bus in Halifax, West Yorkshire. Macenna Shaw, 21, was wearing a balaclava-style ski mask when he struck Grace Marriott on 4 September 2023.
The victim, a trainee teacher in her 30s, suffered a punctured lung, three broken ribs, a broken leg requiring two operations, and permanent scarring. She was dragged several metres along the ground before the biker tried to flee, but was restrained by the bus driver and passers-by.
Shaw, from Bradford, pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He was jailed for 22 months and banned from driving for 35 months at Bradford Crown Court. The court heard he was speeding, not wearing a helmet, and his motorbike had no number plate. Police also found a knuckleduster in his pocket.
In a victim statement, Ms Marriott said: “I feel every part of me has been taken away. I feel like it has ruined my life.” She was unable to move for six weeks, used a wheelchair, and has been unable to complete her teacher training.
Sentencing, Recorder David Gordon said Shaw should have appreciated the risk of someone getting off the bus. Shaw's barrister described his behaviour as “reckless and impulsive” and said he expressed genuine remorse. The motorbike was ordered to be forfeited.
