New road safety cameras will come into operation in the Kingsway Tunnel from tomorrow (Monday, October 19) to help identify dangerous driving behaviours. The technology, called Tunnel Vision, has been introduced by the Merseyside Road Safety Partnership.
What the cameras will detect
The cameras will be used to identify dangerous driving behaviours including using a mobile phone while driving, not wearing a seatbelt, speeding, poor driving, and driving distractions. The Kingsway Tunnel is also known as the Wallasey Tunnel.
The Merseyside Road Safety Partnership is a multi-agency collaboration, made up of Merseyside Police, Merseytravel, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, Merseyside's local authorities and other public sector organisations. It was established to reduce deaths and serious injuries on the region's roads and achieve Vision Zero.
How the technology works
The cameras will identify a potential concern and trained staff will complete quality checks. Police will then review evidence and appropriate action will be considered. The system will not issue fines automatically or determine outcomes on its own. Potential violations are flagged, reviewed and verified before any further steps are taken.
A spokesperson for Merseyside Road Safety Partnership said: “Every journey through the tunnel should be a safe one.
“Behaviours such as distraction, mobile phone use, not wearing a seatbelt and excessive speed can increase the risk of collisions and serious harm.
“Tunnel Vision supports ongoing efforts to identify and address these behaviours.”
