A community in Sheffield is reeling in shock today after a young mother was tragically killed while pushing her baby in a pram, in a horrific hit-and-run incident involving a stolen vehicle.
The 23-year-old mum, who has not yet been formally named, was walking with her three-month-old infant on Saturday afternoon when a black BMW 1 Series, reported stolen hours earlier, mounted the pavement and struck them both.
Baby Miraculously Survives with Minor Injuries
In what police are describing as a miraculous escape, the three-month-old baby survived the collision with what are believed to be minor injuries. The infant was rushed to hospital alongside the mother but was later discharged into the care of family members.
Emergency services battled to save the young mother's life at the scene on Blackstock Road in the Gleadless area, but despite their best efforts, she was pronounced dead in hospital.
Stolen Vehicle Abandoned as Hunt for Driver Intensifies
The suspected stolen car was found abandoned a short distance from the tragic scene, prompting a major police investigation to locate the driver responsible.
South Yorkshire Police have launched a murder investigation and are urgently appealing for witnesses to come forward. Detective Chief Inspector Andrew Knowles described the incident as "truly devastating" and confirmed that a dedicated team of officers is working around the clock to piece together the events leading to the tragedy.
Community in Mourning as Tributes Pour In
Local residents have expressed their shock and heartbreak, with floral tributes beginning to appear at the scene. One neighbour described the area as "usually so quiet and family-friendly", while another spoke of their devastation at the loss of a young life in such tragic circumstances.
Police have increased patrols in the area as the investigation continues, with forensic teams conducting detailed examinations of the abandoned vehicle and the collision site.
Anyone with information, dashcam footage, or CCTV recordings from the area around the time of the incident is urged to contact South Yorkshire Police immediately.
