A dramatic lorry fire on the M25 near the Dartford Crossing has brought chaos to one of the UK's busiest motorways, forcing a full closure and triggering miles of tailbacks.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene after the heavy goods vehicle burst into flames on the clockwise carriageway between junctions 30 (Lakeside) and 31 (Romford). Thick black smoke could be seen billowing across the motorway as firefighters battled the blaze.
Major Disruption for Commuters
The incident has caused:
- Complete closure of the clockwise carriageway
- Severe delays stretching back 7 miles
- Long queues on alternative routes
- Knock-on effects across the orbital motorway
Highways England warned drivers to expect significant disruption throughout the afternoon rush hour, with delays likely to persist into the evening.
Emergency Response
Essex Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they deployed multiple units to tackle the fire, which was brought under control within an hour. No injuries have been reported, though the lorry is believed to be completely destroyed.
Motorists are being advised to:
- Avoid the area if possible
- Allow extra journey time
- Follow diversion routes via the A13
- Check live traffic updates before travelling
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with recovery operations expected to continue well into the evening.
