A County Fermanagh man has been banned from driving for 12 months and fined £600 for dangerous driving after speeding in a Ferrari to visit his dying mother in hospital.
Niall McNulty, 46, from the Sligo Road, Enniskillen, was spotted by police on the M12 in Portadown, County Armagh, on 4 August. Officers saw the red Ferrari join the motorway in an abrupt manoeuvre, cutting in front of other vehicles, before accelerating significantly.
Police pursued the Ferrari onto the M1 motorway, where an unmarked police car reached speeds of up to 140mph to keep up with the vehicle. Officers eventually caught up and pulled McNulty over.
McNulty was charged with speeding and dangerous driving, but the excess speed charge was withdrawn after he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving at Craigavon Magistrates' Court.
A defence lawyer told the court that McNulty had received a call that his mother was seriously ill in hospital in Enniskillen. The lawyer said McNulty's 'only concern was for his mother's health rather than the rules of the road' and that she 'sadly passed away a few days later'.
District Judge Francis Rafferty described the speed as 'outrageous' and, noting that McNulty's father is an undertaker, told the defendant he 'could have created multiple clients for your father'.
