A 33-year-old father from Merseyside has tragically died following a serious road collision on Christmas Eve, which also left his partner with life-changing injuries and their young son hurt.
Details of the Christmas Eve Collision
Stephen Jones, from Bootle, was behind the wheel of a black Ford Puma when it was involved in a crash with a grey Audi A4. The incident occurred in Croxteth at approximately 8:40pm on December 24, 2025.
Emergency services rushed to the scene. Mr Jones was transported to hospital with significant injuries but, despite medical efforts, he sadly passed away on January 3. His family are now being supported by specialist police liaison officers.
Family Tributes and Community Impact
In a heartfelt tribute issued on January 5, Mr Jones's family remembered him as a devoted family man and a pillar of the local community. They described him as a "loving son, brother, partner, uncle but most importantly a dad, a role that meant the world to him."
A lifelong Everton supporter, Stephen was known for his passion for helping others, particularly through his involvement in coaching children's grassroots football. His family stated: "His love for coaching children's grassroot football meant he made a difference in so many lives. Stephen's death will leave a void for many people that won't ever be filled."
His 34-year-old partner remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition. Their eight-year-old son sustained minor injuries and is now being cared for by wider family members.
Police Investigation and Appeal for Witnesses
A 32-year-old man from Liverpool was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and driving while unfit through drink or drugs. He has been released on bail with conditions pending further enquiries.
Detective Sergeant Simon Duffy, from Merseyside Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "Our thoughts remain with Stephen's family at this tragic time. We will continue to support them throughout this investigation and seek to provide the answers that they need."
He emphasised the importance of witness accounts and dashcam footage, issuing a direct appeal: "I would urge anyone travelling in the area of the M57 or the East Lancashire Road, at around 8.30pm on Christmas Eve, to contact my team as soon as possible."
DS Duffy also thanked members of the public who stopped to provide first aid and assist emergency services at the scene.
