Families pay tribute to Minehead couple killed in crash

Two families have been left heartbroken after a much-loved couple died in a fatal car crash on the A358 in Combe Florey, Somerset. Emergency services were called to the scene at around 6.40am on Wednesday 30 September following a collision between a white Mazda Bongo van and a Volvo lorry.

Despite the efforts of emergency personnel, 60-year-old Karen Cozens and 52-year-old David Cozens, both from Minehead, died at the scene.

Family tributes to Karen and David Cozens

In a tribute, Karen’s family expressed their heartbreak and shock following the death of their mum and step-dad. They said: "They were both loved by their family and by everyone around them. They loved going on camping trips, watching banger racing and walking their dogs."

The family added: "We will miss them so much and we only wish they had more time to watch their grandchildren grow up. Mum was an incredible woman who had a heart of gold and was a friend to many. She was the light in our family and the pain of losing her cannot be described."

They also thanked the emergency services, the air ambulance and three members of the public who tried to help the couple after the collision, saying: "It won’t be forgotten."

David Cozens remembered by his son

In a separate tribute, David’s son Matthew said: "Dad always put his family first and was always there for us when we needed him. He was the patriarch of our family and always so proud of his children and grandchildren."

Matthew continued: "He was the jolliest of blokes and always loved to have a laugh with everyone. He was the man who always had a smile to brighten everyone’s day and the memories I shared with him will live on in my heart always."

He added: "The days are becoming shorter but the pain of missing you is only getting harder. I know you’re at peace and reunited with your mum and dad. It’s not goodbye it’s until we meet again, I’ll always love and miss you dearly. Dad, your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure. You are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure."

Police appeal for witnesses

Avon and Somerset Police said both families continue to be supported by a specially-trained family liaison officer. Witnesses who have not yet spoken to police and those with information about the incident are asked to contact the force on 5226279615 or complete an online appeals form.
