A much-loved 89-year-old grandfather and former dental surgeon has died after being hit by a car in Kent, with two men now facing charges in connection with the incident.
Tragedy on Gads Hill
Tom Wallace was struck by a grey Mercedes on the A289 Gads Hill at approximately 12.10pm on December 29. The impact was severe, with reports indicating he was carried by the vehicle and found some distance away on Grange Road.
The Mercedes was later discovered abandoned in Eastcourt Lane, not at the scene of the collision. It is alleged that the two occupants of the car left the area on foot following the crash.
Despite the swift efforts of emergency services and the assistance of compassionate local residents who rushed to help, Mr Wallace was pronounced dead at the scene.
A Life of Service and Family
In a moving tribute, his devastated family described Tom as a "respected and loved member of the community" who "deserved a better end to his life than this".
Tom Wallace, L.D.S, R.C.S. Eng., had dedicated his working life as a dental surgeon serving the Medway Towns. He was married for 63 years, a father of three, a grandfather of four, and had recently become a great-grandfather.
His family stated: "He loved his family dearly and was loved by them in return." His life was filled with remarkable energy and service:
- An avid sailor, he navigated the east coast and crossed the Channel to France, often single-handed.
- He was a longstanding bell-ringer at the church on Gillingham Green.
- He volunteered as a Samaritan for many years.
- He raised funds for the NSPCC and undertook European cycling tours in support of Marie Curie.
The family expressed profound gratitude to the residents of Grange Road, whom they called "compassionate and kind" for their attempts to aid Tom.
Charges Brought Following Investigation
Kent Police have since charged two men in relation to the fatal crash. Albert Matraxhiu, 28, from Edgware, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving. Erald Paci, 29, from Chatham, faces a charge of perverting the course of justice.
Both men appeared in court and were remanded in custody. They did not enter pleas and are next due to appear at Maidstone Crown Court on Friday, January 30.
The community is now mourning the loss of a cherished local figure, as the legal process begins.
