A66 closed after serious two-car crash in Cumbria

The A66 in Cumbria is closed in both directions between the A592 (Redhills) and the B5288 (Penruddock) following a serious road traffic collision involving two vehicles.

Emergency services at the scene

Emergency services have been at the scene since shortly after 10pm on Thursday night, 22 October, according to updates posted on X by National Highways. Police were called to the major road after the incident.

National Highways has warned drivers to 'expect delays' while police continue their work at the scene and repairs to the road are carried out.

Diversion routes for motorists

National Highways has urged travellers to factor in additional time for their journeys, as the closure may affect planned routes. Road users may wish to consider alternative routes or postpone their travel.

Motorists heading westbound are advised to follow the solid circle symbol on road signs, using the following diversion route: at the A66/A592 Rheged roundabout, take the fourth exit towards M6 J40; from M6 J40, take the M6 northbound exit; follow the M6 northbound, exit at J41, and take the first exit onto the B5305 towards Wigton; follow the B5305 through Sebergham to its junction with the A595; turn left onto the A595 towards Keswick; at Bothel, turn left onto the A591 towards Keswick; continue towards Keswick and rejoin the A66 at the Crosthwaite roundabout.

For eastbound traffic, the advice is to follow the hollow diamond symbol on road signs, with the diversion: take the A591 Carlisle exit from the A66/A591 Crosthwaite roundabout and follow the A591 northwards to Bothel; turn right onto the A595 towards Carlisle; turn right onto the B5305 towards Penrith; follow the B5305 through Sebergham to M6 J41 (Catterlen); join the M6 southbound at J41 (Catterlen), and rejoin the A66 at J40 (Skirsgill).
