Three people were arrested at Manchester Airport on Thursday morning (August 5) as part of an ongoing investigation into the suspected theft of duty-free goods.
Pattern of offending identified
Officers said they have identified a pattern of individuals both stealing duty-free items and purchasing duty-free goods and then leaving the airport without boarding a flight. Initial enquiries suggest this activity may have been taking place over a significant period of time.
Joint statement from police and airport
In an official statement, Manchester Airport and Greater Manchester Police said they are working together to tackle this type of offending. The statement reads: "Abuse of the duty-free system not only involves the theft of goods but can also result in the evasion of taxes and duties that would ordinarily be payable on goods purchased within the UK."
They added: "We are paying increased attention to this issue and will take positive action against those involved. A range of resources are used to identify offenders, including intelligence systems, enhanced CCTV, close partnership working, and plain-clothes officers continually operating throughout the airport."
Warning to offenders
GMP said "just because you can't see us doesn't mean we're not there", using both uniformed and plain-clothed officers across the airport. They continued: "Whether it's theft, fraud, drug offences, violence, or the abuse of duty-free concessions, those involved should be aware that we are identifying offenders, gathering intelligence, and taking action."

Whether officers are visible or not, we are actively working to identify offenders, gather intelligence and take enforcement action against anyone involved in criminal activity."
