CCTV footage has exposed the audacious tactics of a pair of serial thieves believed to be targeting pubs across the capital. The brazen heist, which took place at The Stag's Head in Hackney, North London, saw the duo swindle hundreds of pounds from behind the bar using a carefully orchestrated rucksack distraction.
The footage shows a man entering the pub and engaging the landlord in conversation before placing a large rucksack on the bar counter. As the landlord's attention is diverted, an accomplice swiftly moves behind the bar, raids the cash register, and escapes with the contents.
A Calculated Distraction
The entire operation, which lasted mere minutes, was a textbook example of a distraction theft. The first suspect, described as being in his late 30s, created a plausible reason for his presence while his partner-in-crime executed the theft.
Landlord Lee O’Beirne, who has run the popular pub for years, expressed his shock and frustration. "They were so smooth and professional. It was clearly a well-rehearsed routine. One minute I was serving a customer, the next I was hundreds of pounds short," he stated.
Police Hunt for the Duo
The Metropolitan Police have confirmed they are investigating the incident and believe the same individuals may be responsible for a series of similar offences at licensed premises in the area.
A police spokesperson advised: "Landlords and bar staff should be vigilant of this particular method. Be wary of individuals using large bags or items to obscure your view of the till. Always ensure staff are trained to challenge anyone behind the bar who isn't an employee."
This incident serves as a stark warning to the hospitality industry, which has faced significant challenges in recent years. Owners are now being urged to review their security protocols to prevent falling victim to such sophisticated criminal tactics.
