Police have issued a warning to motorists in Skelmersdale and surrounding areas following a series of thefts targeting Fiat 500 cars. Lancashire Police report that the vehicles are being stolen using a specific method before being abandoned shortly after.
Thefts in Skelmersdale and Greater Manchester
The incidents have primarily occurred in Skelmersdale, a Lancashire town located just six miles west of Wigan, which falls under the Greater Manchester district. However, similar thefts have also been reported in other Greater Manchester towns.
Police Advice for Fiat 500 Owners
Drivers are urged to take extra precautions to protect their vehicles. Recommendations include using steering locks, vehicle trackers, and ensuring all doors and windows are locked. Skelmersdale Police stated: 'We are making local residents aware of recent incidents involving thefts of Fiat 500s that have occurred in Skelmersdale and over the border in Greater Manchester.'
The police noted a consistent pattern in the thefts: 'The Fiat 500s have been stolen and abandoned. The cars were done in the same way - windows smashed and entry gained with the ignition barrel broken and wires exposed.'
Extra Precautions Recommended
Authorities advise all Fiat 500 owners in the area to remain vigilant and ensure their vehicles have the steering lock engaged. Additional measures include using vehicle trackers or tags, and keeping cars secured in a garage or locked space. 'Ensure that no valuable items are left in vehicles and car keys are hidden away from public view. Double check that all doors and windows are locked,' the police added.
Having dashcam or CCTV footage is also encouraged to deter offenders and help identify suspects. For further crime prevention advice regarding vehicle security, residents can visit the Secure By Design website.
