Russia unleashed a massive barrage of ballistic missiles and strike drones across Ukraine, triggering emergency security alerts across eastern NATO territory. The overnight assault prompted Poland’s Government Centre for Security (RCB) to issue an urgent warning to residents in the southeastern Lublin and Subcarpathian voivodeships, advising that Polish military jets had been scrambled as Russian strikes edged dangerously close to the border.
Strikes near NATO borders
The aerial bombardment claimed at least two lives and injured 12 in Ukraine, targeting vital transport infrastructure and warehouses. Tensions also spiked in the Black Sea after a suspected Russian drone attack hit two merchant vessels off the coast of NATO member Bulgaria, sinking one ship and forcing emergency rescues.
With strikes near NATO borders and maritime routes, world leaders are closely monitoring the threat of a potential escalation under Article 5, the alliance’s collective defence clause.
Civilian toll in Kharkiv
Russian munitions brought down a stairwell of an apartment building in Kharkiv on the evening of 12 October, and rescuers recovered three bodies from the rubble overnight, local authorities reported. Survivors described fire, falling glass and pets left behind.
Over 24 hours, Russian attacks killed three people in Kharkiv and injured 37, including two children treated for acute stress.
Winter campaign underway
The strike came days after Washington waived sanctions on Russian diesel, as it expects Kyiv to stop hitting Russian refineries. Russia has been striking Ukraine’s cities every day as it readies a winter campaign against Ukrainian infrastructure, while its oil exports keep bringing in the money that pays for the drones and missiles.
