Man Charged Over Alleged Incendiary Attack at Canberra Defence Conference
A 20-year-old man has been arrested and charged with intent to cause public alarm after allegedly throwing a lit incendiary device into Canberra's Hyatt Hotel. The incident occurred on Wednesday during a major defence conference, where rocks were also hurled through a window while the navy chief was delivering a speech.
Police Investigation and Charges
The Australian Federal Police bomb squad seized the device, which continues to undergo forensic examination. Police have yet to provide further details about the nature of the incendiary device. The accused was arrested in Canberra on Friday and charged with damaging property and intent to cause public harm. He was due to face court later on Saturday, with both offences carrying a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment.
Police will allege the incident was intended to cause panic and fear among attendees of the conference being held at the hotel, according to a statement issued on Saturday. AFP assistant commissioner Stephen Nutt emphasized the seriousness of the act, stating: 'Let me be clear, this was not a prank. This was an extremely dangerous act we allege was intended to, and did, have a chilling effect on conference attendees, as well as staff and other guests of the hotel.'
Counter-Terrorism Investigation
The ACT Joint Counter Terrorism Team investigated the incident alongside the Australian Federal Police and ASIO. During police raids at homes in the Canberra suburbs of Campbell and Scullin on Friday, various other items were seized and are undergoing forensic investigation. Further charges have not been ruled out as detectives continue investigations into the possible involvement of others.
Assistant Commissioner Nutt added: 'We will not tolerate criminal behaviour or actions which advocate hatred, fear, violence and humiliation, and attempt to erode Australia's social fabric.' The AFP says further charges over the incident are possible as the investigation progresses.
