Man arrested at Manchester airport over synagogue attack

Greater Manchester Police have made a significant new arrest in the ongoing investigation into the devastating terrorist attack on a Manchester synagogue. A 31-year-old man was taken into custody on suspicion of plotting a terror attack.

Airport Arrest in Ongoing Investigation

The suspect was arrested after arriving on an inbound flight to Manchester airport on Thursday. He remains in police custody for questioning as detectives work to establish the full nature of his alleged involvement.

This arrest marks the seventh individual detained in connection with the attack on Heaton Park shul, which occurred on 2 October - Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. The incident has been described as the most lethal antisemitic attack in Britain in modern times.

Tragic Details of the Original Attack

The synagogue assault saw Jihad Al-Shamie, 35, launch a car and knife attack that resulted in multiple casualties. Tragically, Melvin Cravitz, 66, and Adrian Daulby, 53, both lost their lives during the horrific incident.

Cravitz died in hospital from stab wounds, while Daulby was fatally struck by a police bullet fired by armed officers responding to the emergency. The attacker, Al-Shamie, was shot dead by police while wearing what was later confirmed to be a fake explosive belt.

Continued Police Appeals for Information

Assistant Chief Constable Rob Potts confirmed that the families of both victims have been updated on this latest development in the investigation. He reiterated the force's commitment to pursuing all lines of inquiry.

"Our investigation is continuing, and I would once again appeal for anyone with information that they think could assist our inquiries to please come forward," Potts stated. The police are particularly keen to identify and speak to anyone who was present during the attack or its immediate aftermath to ensure they receive appropriate welfare support.

Another suspect, a 30-year-old man, was previously arrested on 9 October at Manchester airport on suspicion of failing to disclose information that could have prevented a terror attack. He remains on bail as the complex investigation continues to unfold.
