In a scene of profound loyalty amidst the horror of the Bondi Beach terror attack, a Bernese Mountain dog named Maui refused to abandon her owner, who was killed in the antisemitic shooting. The devastating incident, which took place on Sunday, 14 December 2025, during a Hanukah celebration, left at least 15 victims dead and dozens more injured.
A Canine's Unwavering Devotion
New footage from the tragic scene has captured the heart-wrenching moment Maui stood guard over her owner's body. The dog was seen panic-stricken as gunshots rang out, yet she remained steadfastly by his side. The video, which began circulating online on Monday, prompted a widespread social media campaign led by Anne-Marie Curry of Arthur and Co Pet Detectives to locate the dog and reunite her with her family.
It was later confirmed that Maui's owner was among those killed in the attack, though his identity has not been formally released. It is believed he was walking with his wife and their other dog, a small white poodle, when the gunmen opened fire. Ms Curry confirmed that Maui is now safe and has been returned to the victim's surviving wife, thanks to concerted efforts from the local community and online 'lost and found' groups.
The Terror Attack and Its Aftermath
The shooting was an act of terrorism carried out by father-and-son duo Sajid and Naveed Akram, aged 50 and 24. Police allege the attack was inspired by the Islamic State (ISIS). At least 16 people lost their lives, including one of the gunmen, Sajid Akram, who was shot by police. His son, Naveed, remains in a critical condition in hospital.
New South Wales police commissioner Mal Lanyon stated that improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and two homemade IS flags were recovered from a car registered to Naveed found at the scene. The commissioner also alleged the pair had recently travelled to the Philippines, a claim confirmed by officials in Manila.
Among the victims were Holocaust survivor Alexander Kleytman, London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, French national Dan Elkayam, businessman Reuven Morrison, retired police officer Peter Meagher, and a 10-year-old girl named Matilda. A further 42 people were taken to hospital, with five in a critical but stable condition and two police officers in a serious but stable state.
Community Response and a Tribute
The story of Maui's loyalty has touched people around the world, offering a glimmer of humanity amid the tragedy. A Facebook user claiming to be a friend of the victim paid tribute, writing: "Our friend was Maui’s dad who was killed. She adored her dad, and my heart breaks for her... He was such a lovely guy. A really gentle soul."
The attack continues to reverberate across Australia and internationally, with communities mourning the lives lost in the shocking violence at Bondi Beach.
