A 23-year-old British man, Muhammad Billal, has been convicted of plotting a deadly gun attack in Somalia under the direction of the terrorist group ISIS. The extremist, from west London, was found guilty at the Old Bailey and now faces a potential life sentence.
Billal, who pledged allegiance to ISIS in 2021, was described by prosecutors as a "committed terrorist" who actively sought to carry out violent jihad. The court heard how he researched potential targets in Somalia and discussed attack methods with other extremists.
The ISIS Connection
Evidence presented during the trial revealed Billal's deep involvement with ISIS. He communicated with the group's members and expressed his desire to travel to Somalia to commit acts of terrorism. Prosecutors stated he was "prepared to die" for the cause.
Police Investigation
The Metropolitan Police's Counter Terrorism Command began investigating Billal after uncovering his online activities. Detectives found extensive evidence of his extremist views and attack planning on his electronic devices.
Commander Dominic Murphy, head of the Counter Terrorism Command, said: "This case demonstrates our commitment to tackling terrorism in all its forms, including individuals planning attacks overseas."
Sentencing
Billal will be sentenced at a later date. The judge warned he faces a "very substantial" prison term for his crimes. This case highlights the ongoing threat posed by homegrown extremism in the UK.
