Ann Widdecombe Killed in Targeted Attack, Police Say

Counter-terrorism police have confirmed that former Conservative minister and Reform UK spokeswoman Ann Widdecombe was killed in a "targeted attack" at her home in Haytor, Devon. The 78-year-old was found dead with serious injuries on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at around 11:40 AM after the ambulance service was called.

Investigation Taken Over by Counter-Terrorism Policing

On Monday, July 13, it was announced that the Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE) is now leading the investigation, following "new information and evidence" that emerged during the inquiry. A 28-year-old white British man from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, who was initially arrested on suspicion of murder on Saturday, July 11, has been rearrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.

Head of National Counter Terrorism Policing, Laurence Taylor, said: "Building on the progress made by our colleagues in Devon and Cornwall Police, we now have new information and evidence that means Counter Terrorism Policing is now leading the investigation. We are pursuing multiple lines of enquiry to establish the motivation for this attack."

Ann Widdecombe, a prominent figure in British politics, served as a Conservative MP and later became a spokesperson for Reform UK. She was known for her outspoken views and had recently appeared on Talk TV on July 8, the day before her death.

Police Appeal for Information

Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward. Taylor added: "Our priority is progressing this investigation quickly, with all the capabilities we have available to us. If anyone has any information, please share it with the police."

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced she would update MPs on the "horrific" murder later on Monday. She stated: "Following new information and evidence, they are now leading on the investigation into the horrific murder of Ann Widdecombe. The police are pursuing multiple lines of inquiry to establish the motivation for this attack. I will be updating the House further this afternoon. My thoughts today remain with Ann's family and friends, and all those who loved her."

Continued Cooperation Between Forces

CTPSE confirmed it will work closely with Devon and Cornwall Police's Major Crime Investigation Team and the wider counter-terrorism network to establish the full circumstances of the incident. The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue.
