Woman jailed for sex offences against girl

Gemma Baker, 42, from Leicester, has been sentenced to six years in prison after being convicted of 10 counts of gross indecency with a child, offences committed between 1999 and 2004 against a girl aged six to 11.

The case came to light after Baker posted a Facebook comment about another paedophile receiving what she considered an insufficient prison sentence. The victim, now an adult, saw the post and sent Baker a message saying: "You're lucky it's not you doing a prison sentence," and labelled her a "paedophile".

After discovering that Baker now had children of her own, the victim approached Leicestershire Police to report the abuse she had suffered as a young girl.

Trial and sentencing

Baker stood trial at Leicester Crown Court earlier this week. Following the jury's guilty verdict, she appeared before Judge Timothy Spencer KC for sentencing on Friday, where the six-year custodial sentence was handed down.

At the outset of the trial, prosecutor Nichoilas Corsellis KC told the jury that the victim had "put the experience to the back of her mind and got on with her life the best she could" following the offences, before eventually coming forward in 2021.

Victim's account

During a video interview with police shown to the jury, the victim recounted the first incident. She said: "We were in my bed. I had on a nightie and she put her hand up my nightie and down my underwear and ignored that I was crying. I remember saying it was hurting and she just ignored me."

She added: "She never spoke about any of the incidents or told me not to tell anyone - I think she knew I was too scared to tell anyone."
