A registered sex offender has been arrested for allegedly attempting to enroll at a high school as a homeless teenage girl, just one year after pulling a similar stunt. Makayla Craig, 29, reportedly claimed to be a 17-year-old girl named Molly from Oregon on the enrollment application.
Attempt to Enroll at Maple Grove High School
Craig is said to have told police he applied at Maple Grove High School outside of Minneapolis as a teenager because he had never attended school before and wanted to "get the full experience." School staff had suspicions upon receiving the application and contacted police, according to charging documents obtained by KARE. Police arrested Craig on Thursday.
He told police he changed his name and age on the application because he was worried he'd be mistaken for "Makayla Craig" - a registered sex offender from Oregon who he turned out to be. Craig "never completed enrollment with Maple Grove Senior High School, and he was never present on campus as a student or in any online classes," the Maple Grove Police Department said in a press release.
Charges and Bond
The man was charged with several counts of felony forgery and is being held on a $50,000 bond, jail records reveal. He is due to appear in court on Friday.
Previous Offenses
Last year, at age 27, Craig was jailed for 40 days after posing as a 15-year-old homeless girl named Madison. He then tried to register for high school in Albany, Oregon with fake documents, according to KGW. Reports at the time referred to Craig with female pronouns.
Craig was first put on the Sex Offenders' Register when he was convicted of third-degree sexual abuse in May 2023 with a minor. He was sentenced to three years' probation and was barred from contacting children during that time, the outlet reported. He was acquitted of DUI in a 2023 jury trial following an arrest in 2020.
