Man admits 32 sexual offences against girlfriend over 11 years

A man in his 40s has pleaded guilty to 32 sexual offences against his girlfriend, including rape and sexual assault, committed over an 11-year period. The accused, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Northampton Crown Court on Tuesday and now faces the possibility of a life sentence.

Details of the Offences

The offences occurred between January 2014 and September last year. The charges include 12 counts of rape, 14 counts of assault by penetration, and six counts of sexual assault. Ten of these offences were committed 'together with a person unknown,' according to the court. Recordings of some attacks were found on the defendant's devices.

Court Proceedings

During the arraignment, the defendant, dressed in a green T-shirt, became emotional and requested a moment to compose himself. He sat with his head bowed in the dock for a brief period. The prosecution, led by Alexandra Felix KC, maintains that the victim was drugged or asleep during all offences. However, the defence disputes this claim, stating it is not accepted in its entirety. Defence barrister Nathalie Carter confirmed that the defendant did not wish to contest any matters, and no Newton hearing will take place.

Sentencing and Potential Life Sentence

Judge David Herbert KC warned the defendant that a 'very substantial prison sentence is inevitable' and that he will consider whether a life sentence is appropriate. Sentencing is scheduled for September 18.
