Shocking new court documents have detailed a violent alleged sexual assault in Melbourne's city centre, following the extradition of a French national from Sydney.
Alleged Attack Following Nightclub Incident
Adam Berguiga, a 22-year-old Frenchman, appeared at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Wednesday after being charged with multiple counts of rape and assault. Police allege that on New Year's Eve, Berguiga was at a CBD nightclub when he saw a woman fall on the dancefloor. He then offered to help her outside.
Court documents allege that instead of assisting her, Berguiga escorted the woman to Coors Laneway, a tiny thoroughfare between Little Bourke and Lonsdale Streets, in the early hours of New Year's Day. There, he is accused of repeatedly raping the woman in a violent street attack.
Violent Details and Swift Arrest
The released documents lay bare the extent of the alleged assault. It is claimed Berguiga savagely attacked the woman, causing bruises to her left shoulder and head, as well as grazing to her knees. The allegations further state that he kissed the woman during the sexual assault.
Following the release of CCTV footage and a composite image, police issued an arrest warrant on Saturday evening. Berguiga was recognised by authorities as he allegedly tried to leave the country. He was arrested at Sydney International Airport around midday on Sunday and extradited back to Victoria on Monday.
Remanded in Custody Ahead of April Hearing
During the court hearing, it was revealed that Berguiga cannot speak English and has never been in prison before. He made no application for bail and has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance in April. The court heard he would be given access to a mental health professional while in jail, where he was described as potentially 'vulnerable'.
In addition to the sexual assault charges, Berguiga faces driving offences. Police claim he had been illegally driving a blue 2007 Toyota Yaris sedan in the city without a licence, both before and after the alleged incident. He was known to frequent the Melbourne CBD, St Kilda, and Port Phillip areas.
