Utah Governor Spencer Cox has stated that the man suspected of killing conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, Tyler Robinson, 22, came from a conservative family but held a very different ideology. Cox made the remarks during multiple national television appearances on Sunday, four days after Kirk was fatally shot at an event at Utah Valley University.
According to Cox, Robinson was in a relationship with a person transitioning from male to female. The governor noted that investigators are still exploring possible motives, but he stopped short of confirming that the partner’s status was a factor. Cox said Robinson is not cooperating with authorities, but information from family and friends indicates he was radicalized.
Cox told NBC’s Meet the Press that Robinson’s roommate, who is transitioning, has been cooperative and was shocked by the incident. He also mentioned that investigators found evidence of Robinson engaging with “deep, dark internet culture.” On Saturday, Cox told the Wall Street Journal that Robinson was “deeply indoctrinated with leftist ideology.”
Robinson, a third-year electrical apprentice at Dixie Technical College, surrendered to authorities on Friday after a two-day manhunt. His parents are registered Republicans who voted in the 2024 election. Public records offer little insight into Robinson’s personal beliefs.
Cox warned about the influence of internet and social media platforms, calling them “conflict entrepreneurs” that hack brains and promote outrage. He emphasized that investigators are still working to understand the full context of the case, including the relevance of Robinson’s personal relationship.
