Three men have been jailed for a combined total of more than 20 years for the rape of a student in Worcestershire. Arjan Purewal, Jaskaran Thandi, and Hassan Jangheer, all aged 23, attacked the victim in the early hours of Saturday, September 16, 2023, after picking her up in Birmingham.
Attack in Clent Hills
Worcester Crown Court heard how the men picked up the victim in Birmingham and drove up and down Broad Street, a major thoroughfare and the primary nightlife area of the city, before heading to the rural Clent Hills, near the village of Hagley in Worcestershire — a distance of around 10 miles.
Purewal, who filmed the attack on his mobile phone, orally raped the woman before Jangheer forced her to perform a sexual act on him and Thandi sexually assaulted her. The court heard how Purewal had hired a BMW using someone else's driving licence and ID to target a victim and carry out the rape.
Victim dumped and police called
West Mercia Police said the victim was "dumped in the middle of nowhere" following the attack. She then called officers who arrived on Vine Lane, in Clent, at around 3.30am. The victim reported that the attackers were in a silver-grey BMW car. She informed police about what happened before Purewal, Thandi, and Jangheer were identified and arrested.
Purewal, of Wolverhampton Road, Oldbury, was convicted of rape, blackmail, perverting the course of justice and possession of an identification document with improper intention following a trial in March 2025. On Friday, October 5, he was sentenced to seven years and six months for rape, one year concurrent for blackmail, one year consecutively for perverting the course of justice and a further eight months concurrently for the possession of an identification document — a total of eight years and six months.
Sentences and police response
Thandi, of Hewell, Redditch, was sentenced to six years and four months for aiding and abetting rape and two years concurrently for sexual assault. Jangheer, of Grenville Drive, Smethwick, was sentenced to six years for aiding and abetting rape and two years concurrently for sexual assault. All three were ordered to pay victim surcharges of £228.
Detective Inspector Warren Matthews, of West Mercia Police, said: "We welcome the result achieved at court. The behaviour of the perpetrators was appalling, and it is right that they are now behind bars. Their vile and predatory actions caused significant harm to the survivor, but we hope the sentencing helps on her path to recovery.
"I also hope this outcome provides reassurance to victims and survivors that when they come forward, they will be heard. We treat all reports seriously, investigate them thoroughly, and remain committed to bringing offenders to justice while supporting those affected throughout the process."
