A 25-year-old man has been sentenced to prison for a brutal and pre-planned attack on his own father, whom he met for the very first time behind bars.
A Savage Assault Behind Bars
Lee Spence carried out the violent assault on 12 July last year within the walls of HMP Perth. The court heard how the attack was a deliberate act of revenge, which Spence later stated was for his mother. Armed with a blade, he targeted his father, John Spence, during their inaugural meeting.
The assault left the victim with a severe laceration running from his ear down to his neck. The injury was so significant that it required medical treatment with more than 40 stitches to close the wound.
Guilty Plea and Court Proceedings
Lee Spence admitted his guilt when the case was called at the High Court in Edinburgh in November. He pleaded guilty to charges of striking his father on the head and neck with a blade and the more serious charge of attempting to murder him.
Prosecutors described the incident as a "savage, premeditated and unprovoked" act of violence. The context of the attack—a first-ever meeting between father and son in a prison setting—added a particularly grim dimension to the case.
Justice Served
The court has now handed down a prison sentence to Lee Spence for his actions. The case highlights the extreme and tragic consequences of familial breakdown and the potential for violence within the prison system itself.
The sentencing marks the conclusion of a disturbing case that began with a long-awaited meeting and ended in bloodshed and a major criminal conviction.
