Russell Brand described being in a police cell as a 'lonely' and 'tiresome' experience in a resurfaced clip from 2014, following his conviction for rape and sexual assault.
During an appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show in October 2014, Brand detailed how he 'didn't like' being arrested and stated that he felt 'lonely' while in a police cell. The comments came as he and fellow guest Lindsay Lohan discussed their respective legal troubles, with the actress opening up about her 14 days in solitary confinement after she was caught drunk behind the wheel almost 20 years ago.
Conviction and Custody
Brand faces a lengthy stint in prison after being convicted of four serious sexual offences. He was found guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault following a four-week trial at Southwark Crown Court in London.
The comedian remains in custody, and it is not his first taste of life inside a cell. In the unearthed clip, Jonathan Ross confirmed that Brand had never actually been jailed for his behaviour.
Brand's Account of Arrest
Brand responded: "No, sometimes they would leave me in police cells for a while. I didn't like that very much. It's tiresome in there, it's lonely. It's hard to build rapport."
The comedian told Lindsay that it was "worse getting arrested in your country". He went on: "In New Orleans, I was arrested and everyone had an orange boiler suit, I felt so left out."
He added: "The police are so much more friendly [in the UK] for a start, we get cuffed at the front not from behind. The police cars, you're so crunched up there. And they took all my drugs off me. It's boring in the cell, that's when you need drugs to take the edge off. It's cruel really."
Sentencing and Charges
Mr Justice Bennathan warned Brand that he faced a "significant custodial sentence" before remanding him in custody on Thursday. The judge did not give Brand the opportunity to say goodbye to his children, fearing he would flee rather than appearing before the court on Monday for sentencing. Brand loudly replied "yes My Lord".
The prison where Brand will serve his sentence has yet to be determined. He has been found guilty of the rape of a 21-year-old woman he encountered after a comedy performance at the Hammersmith Apollo in 2009. Brand was also convicted of sexually assaulting an MTV employee at a Soho bar, a woman at the Choice FM studios, and a Channel 4 worker who had been instructed to give him a massage.
Brand had faced seven charges in total: three of rape, three of sexual assault and one of attempted indecent assault. He was acquitted of raping a woman at a hotel in Bournemouth in 1999, during the Labour Party conference at which Brand had been performing at a cabaret show.
